What happens when one young voice speaks the truth that everyone else is afraid to face? This narrative follows a quiet ninth-grade student whose extraordinary speech transforms an entire community.
R.C. Tabb writes stories that examine difficult social realities while pointing toward hope and accountability. His work is grounded in years of observation, research, and firsthand exposure to individuals affected by abuse and neglect.
R.C. Tabb was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and came of age during the 1960s and 1970s. At eight years old, he survived a near-death experience that profoundly shaped his outlook on life. After graduating from high school, he attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta, where he studied communications. During the summer of 1981, he worked as a youth counselor for the City of Atlanta.
While working as a corrections officer in Washington State, R.C. Tabb gained direct exposure to the lives and histories of incarcerated offenders.
R. C Tabb engaged in discussions with people from dramatically different backgrounds, from individuals living on the streets to professionals in corporate America.
During these encounters, R.C Tabb observed that abuse frequently repeats itself across generations, which led his decision to write Fatima Anderson’s Journey to Garden City.
The story unfolds at Hampton High School, led by the strict and uncompromising Principal Johnson, known to students as “Ole Boulder Head.” When a forgotten fax reminds the staff that Child Abuse Awareness Month has arrived, teachers must quickly organize a student assembly with speeches addressing the topic. Several students volunteer. Then a quiet ninth-grader named Fatima Anderson takes the stage. Instead of delivering a traditional speech, Fatima begins describing a dreamlike journey toward a place she calls Garden City, a place she remembers from stories shared by her mother.
Set in Hampton High School, the novel unfolds through an unexpected student speech that turns into a powerful allegorical tale.

I’ll be honest, I picked this up thinking it was just a YA story, but it hit me like a freight train. Being a father in a city with its own heavy history of child safety, the author’s background in Atlanta really grounded the stakes for me. If you have a child in your life, or if you were once a child who felt unseen, you need to read this!! -

There is a quiet, haunting beauty in Fatima’s 'speech' that I haven't been able to shake. I’ve worked in education for twenty years, and I’ve seen so many 'Fatimas', the quiet kids in the back of the room carrying worlds of pain behind their eyes. This one is a heartbreaking, breathtaking, and ultimately healing piece of literature.

I finished this book at 2:00 AM with tears blurring the last few pages. As someone who grew up in a home where the 'horror' of abuse was a daily reality, Fatima’s journey felt like it was written specifically for my inner child. Seeing a young girl like Fatima find the strength to speak her truth in front of her whole school gave me a kind of permission I didn't know I needed
